Abstract:
This volume has been corrected, as far as possible, up to the 1st ' January
.1929. It may be explained that the lists of Officers serving in India (pages 7 to 1 1
are compiled from the Civil Lists of the Government of India and the Province
Governments published in October last, while the records of these officers given
Record of Services Section (pages 489 to 891) are based on the corresponding
Histories of Services published in July last. Later information received as
changes occurring up to the 1st January last has, however, been used, in t
compilation of these sections.
In the lists of Officers serving in Jndia (pages 7 to 114) only substanti
appointments are, as a rule, shown; the lists contain the names of all members
the All-India Services and the Indian Political Service, of Chaplains on the Indi
Ecclesiastical Establishment, and of other officers drawing pay o f not less th
Rs. xooo a month. The names shown in italics are those of Officers who ;
in foreign service, supernumerary, seconded, or employed outside their o
departments. To meet the difficulty that arises from the lack of uniformity in India in t
use of surnames, Indian names are in doubtful cases twice indexed, and cr<
references are made in the Record of Services. Rulers of States are sho'
under the names of their States.
The principle of selection followed in the Record of Services (pages 489
891) is explained on page 489.
The “ Index of Subjects and Appiontments ” is on pages iv to xvi, and t
“ Index of Names” on page 890 (t seq. Names in’ the Honours Lists ai
Record of Services are shown in the. Index of Names by and “ 3&,” with
note prefixed referring to the- Alphabetical Lists on -pages' 176 to 228 and page
489 to 891.
It is requested that intimations of errors in the lists, or of omissions, m;
be addressed to the Editor of the India Office List, India Office, Whiteha
London, S.W.
